FA to Review Awoniyi’s Religious Goal Celebration

FA to Review Awoniyi’s Religious Goal Celebration

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi may face disciplinary action after revealing a religious message during his 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on March 22, 2026. After scoring in the 87th minute, he lifted his match shirt to show “God is the greatest.” Referee Thomas Bramall booked him for removing his jersey and the FA will now examine the message under Law 4, which bans political, religious or personal slogans. This is not his first faith-driven celebration. In 2024 he was cautioned for revealing a Bible verse after scoring against West Ham, and he faced similar scrutiny in the Belgian league. Forest claimed their first victory under manager Vítor Pereira, moving to 16th place. The club now awaits the FA’s ruling, expected within 48 hours.

Do disciplinary guidelines around goal celebrations ever cross into restricting personal expression for players like Awoniyi?

Have they specified which part of his celebration the FA found problematic?

Are we sure those guidelines target religious gestures, or do they apply to all kinds of celebrations equally?

It's odd that a simple religious message on a shirt prompted a referee's report when many celebrations are more provocative.

I get the intent, but clubs must keep religious displays off the pitch to maintain neutrality and avoid future chaos.

Teams should update their player handbooks with clear guidelines on celebrations so there's no confusion about permissible messages.
