How Reckless Driving Fuels Nigeria’s Road Death Toll

How Reckless Driving Fuels Nigeria’s Road Death Toll

Road accidents have become a grim reality in Nigeria. In 2025, the FRSC recorded over 10,000 crashes and more than 5,200 deaths. Thousands more were injured and left with lasting burdens. Speeding is the leading cause of crashes. Dangerous overtaking, driver fatigue, vehicle overloading and flouting traffic rules make matters worse. Many drivers risk lives to earn more, while some motorists treat highways as racing tracks. Passengers share responsibility. Speaking up against unsafe driving can save lives. Government agencies must also improve road conditions and ensure consistent enforcement of traffic laws. Reducing road deaths requires a shift from recklessness to discipline, patience and respect for human life. No journey is worth a lost life.
