FUL Lecturer: Hard Work, Not Just Prayer, Drives Nigeria’s Growth

FUL Lecturer: Hard Work, Not Just Prayer, Drives Nigeria’s Growth

At the 41st inaugural lecture at Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Ebenezer Ejalonibu Lawal challenged Nigerians to balance prayer with action. He argued that relying solely on prayer without applying God-given intellect and skills hinders the country’s development. Lawal outlined the “pedestal” of aspirations—good governance, rule of law and inclusive growth—and the “pragmatics” of political life that shape real outcomes. He urged academics and citizens to study practical approaches that bridge the gap between ideals and reality and to turn development paradoxes into opportunities for change. The Vice-Chancellor commended the lecturer’s commitment to research and quoted George Orwell on the substance of political science, inviting the audience to reflect on words versus actionable ideas.
