Akwa Ibom’s Tree Crop Revolution: Planting Wealth and Jobs Beyond Oil

Akwa Ibom’s Tree Crop Revolution: Planting Wealth and Jobs Beyond Oil

A new initiative will deliver over 620,000 improved oil palm seedlings to farms across the state, aiming to cultivate 100,000 hectares of plantation and create more than 30,000 jobs over five years. The programme seeks to rekindle Akwa Ibom’s palm oil heritage by combining ancestral farming practices with mechanised support and private investment. Selected households in all 31 local government areas will each receive 40 seedlings at take-off after a comprehensive ward-by-ward enumeration exercise. Aligned with the ARISE Agenda’s pillars of agriculture, rural development and infrastructure, the plan emphasises value addition and agro-industrial expansion. Officials expect private-sector processing and export investments to drive sustainable growth and boost rural incomes. Once a major global palm oil producer, Nigeria saw its output decline after crude oil discovery. By reviving this sector, Akwa Ibom aims to build generational wealth and reclaim its place among leading palm oil exporters.
