Dele Aiyenugba on 15 Penalty Saves, a Referee’s ‘Save Your Life’ Plea and Coaching Insights

Dele Aiyenugba on 15 Penalty Saves, a Referee’s ‘Save Your Life’ Plea and Coaching Insights

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba says he stopped 15 penalties across domestic, cup and European games thanks to what he calls a gift from God and close study of each taker’s eye movements. He recalls a humorous 2004 league match where, after saving Gombe United’s spot kick, the referee begged him to let the next attempt in “to save his life.” Now Kwara United’s goalkeeper coach, Aiyenugba assesses NPFL goalkeeping talent, advises patience for young custodians and warns against judging keepers only by their ball-playing skills. He also shares pride in his son’s goalkeeping career, memories of Enyimba’s back-to-back CAF Champions League triumphs and calls on officials to honour those achievements.
