Unity School Alumni Protest FGC Kano Land Swap in Lagos, Abuja and Kano
Over 2,000 alumni of Nigeria’s Federal Government Colleges took to the streets in Lagos, Abuja and Kano on May 9 to oppose a Public-Private Partnership deal at FGC Kano. They say the proposed land concession for infrastructure upgrades amounts to “commercialisation of a national legacy,” with the developer set to receive 30–33 hectares valued at over ₦36 billion in exchange for an ₦8.5 billion investment. The nationwide rally was organised by the Unity Schools Old Students Association under the slogan “Pro Unitate – Better Together.” Alumni offered to match the government’s funding request for the project without surrendering any land, but said education authorities declined their proposal in recent talks with the Minister of Education. Speakers highlighted risks that a mixed-use development could pose to student safety and campus integrity. Despite assurances from the developer that new facilities will include hostels, laboratories and a sports complex, alumni leaders insist the land is meant for learning and recreation alone. The protest drew representatives from over 40 Unity Schools. Alumni have submitted a petition with more than 4,000 signatures to the Presidency and now plan to take the matter to the National Assembly, demanding an immediate cancellation of the concession agreement.
