UNICEF: Nigeria Has 18.3 Million Out-of-School Children, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina Worst Hit
New data from UNICEF show Nigeria tops the world with about 18.3 million out-of-school children. Jigawa, Kano and Katsina alone account for nearly 30% of this figure. Poverty, insecurity, cultural beliefs and limited access to pre-primary classes drive these high rates. Experts stress that quality early childhood education builds basic skills, boosts retention and reduces dropouts, especially since much brain development occurs before age five. Without broader access to preschool—particularly in rural areas—many children never make it to or stay in primary school. UNICEF and stakeholders are calling on government to increase funding, expand early learning centres and improve teacher training to reverse Nigeria’s out-of-school crisis.
