NSIB Launches Full Probe into Container Vessel–Oil Tanker Collision at Bonny Anchorage

NSIB Launches Full Probe into Container Vessel–Oil Tanker Collision at Bonny Anchorage

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has opened a full investigation into the May 20 collision between a container vessel and an oil tanker at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State. A specialised team deployed on May 22 secured evidence on both vessels and interviewed the Masters and key crew. Navigational records, operational documents, and data from the Voyage Data Recorder and ECDIS of the MV Maersk Valparaiso were seized for forensic examination. In line with international maritime protocols, Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau was formally notified. The NSIB is engaging local and international stakeholders to ensure an independent, professional inquiry. The Bureau has pledged to issue urgent safety recommendations if needed and will publish a final report once the investigation concludes.

It's interesting that they waited two days to secure evidence on board both vessels before beginning interviews of the Masters.
