Lagos Alerts Residents Over Spoilt ‘Ata Esha’ Tomatoes, Cites Health Dangers
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has warned against consuming fungus-infested tomatoes, known locally as “Ata Esha.” Fungi on these tomatoes can produce aflatoxins, which may lead to liver damage and other serious health issues. The agency’s General Manager urged consumers to avoid purchasing tomatoes with visible white, green or black mould. He stressed that cooking or frying contaminated fruit does not eliminate all harmful toxins. Monitoring teams are now deployed to markets across the state to apprehend traders selling unsafe produce. Residents are encouraged to inspect food items carefully, dispose of mouldy products properly and report vendors offering expired or spoiled goods to the appropriate health authorities.
