US Puts 23 Nations on ‘Do Not Travel’ Advisory, 11 in Africa

The US State Department has upgraded its travel advisory to Level 4 for 23 countries. Americans are urged to avoid travel for any reason. Level 4 warnings apply when local conditions are dangerous or when US assistance is limited. The department warns: “These places are dangerous. Do not go for ANY reason.” African nations on the list include Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. Other countries affected are North Korea and Myanmar. Nigeria remains at Level 3: Reconsider Travel, while several Nigerian states are at Level 4 due to ongoing security concerns.

With so many countries flagged as Level 4 do you think this will reshape travel plans for Americans heading to Africa or elsewhere?

True oh, guess Americans go rethink that Africa trip plan, maybe scout new spots closer home first.

It seems odd that eleven of those Level 4 warnings are in Africa when many nations elsewhere face similar risks.

I get the safety concerns but lumping eleven African nations together overlooks positive developments and progress in some of these destinations.

Before booking travel anywhere consider registering with the embassy and reviewing local news updates for security alerts and support availability.
