Why Our Children Need Interpreters for Their Mother Tongue

Why Our Children Need Interpreters for Their Mother Tongue

I met Dr. Oyiboka at Amsterdam airport. He is the crown prince of Aniaghaa town. He cannot speak Igbo despite his royal heritage. His mother banned Igbo at home. She believed English would make them more worldly. He grew up in international schools and moved to the US without his language. Now his father will soon pass and he fears ruling in English. He married an Igbo teacher and hopes to learn the language before he returns to assume the throne. I have also hired Igbo tutors for my children. I insist they speak Igbo at home. Losing our mother tongue is a self-inflicted wound and a threat to our identity. What steps will you take to keep our languages alive?

It strikes me as odd that someone with royal heritage would grow up completely disconnected from his ancestral language.

Isn't it possible that focusing on English first could actually help children engage more easily on global platforms?

Parents can set aside brief daily sessions where kids speak only their mother tongue, reinforcing familiarity over time.
