Mother’s Bold Request and Jesus’ Lesson on True Greatness
In Matthew 20:20–28, the mother of Zebedee’s sons kneels before Jesus, asking that her two boys sit at his right and left in his kingdom. Jesus warns them they don’t understand what they’re asking and speaks of the cup he must drink. When James and John insist they can endure his suffering, Jesus tells them the places of honor aren’t his to grant but belong to those chosen by the Father. The other disciples grow indignant at the brothers’ ambition. Jesus then contrasts worldly power with heavenly service: those who wish to be great must become servants, and those who wish to be first must be slaves. He reminds them he came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
