After Tinubu: Why Has South West Lost Its Protest Spirit?

Lisa raises a valid concern, but I want to step back a moment. Many in the South West were once die-hard activists. You led nationwide protests against President Jonathan’s fuel subsidy, joined the 2012 #OccupyNigeria movement in Ojota and used media influence to demand change. Prominent pastors, political figures and celebrities amplified that call. Since Tinubu took office, many voices have gone quiet. Some former champions of good governance now defend a government that, in many ways, has fallen short of expectations. This shift reflects tribal loyalties more than policy debates. Nigeria’s cycle of betrayal and self-deception hurts everyone. Unless we confront the hypocrisy that binds us, real progress will remain out of reach. How much longer can this go on?

It's interesting how strong protest momentum around fuel subsidy vanished within months despite deep public frustration.

I'm not convinced nostalgia for past protests explains current silence; there might be new strategies we're overlooking.

Focusing on local community education and digital mobilization could reenergize youth engagement without repeating old protest templates.
