Attorney General Moves to Deregister Five Political Parties Over Electoral Shortfall
The Attorney General of the Federation has filed a suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026) at the Federal High Court in Abuja. It names INEC and five parties—the ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord, and ZLP—as defendants. He wants INEC to deregister them for failing to meet constitutional performance requirements. Under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022, a party must win at least 25% of votes in one state during a presidential election or secure an elective seat at any level. The suit argues these parties have repeatedly fallen short of these benchmarks. Critics say too many inactive parties fragment the political system and confuse voters. INEC previously deregistered multiple parties in 2020 after similar findings. This latest case reignites debate over enforcing performance criteria to strengthen Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
