Fernandes Slams Referee After Martinez’s Red Card Costs United at Old Trafford

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes criticized the referee following Lisandro Martinez’s straight red card in the 56th minute. Referee Paul Tierney, backed by a VAR review, dismissed Martinez for violent conduct after an incident with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Fernandes complained post-match: “If I talk about the referee, I’m going to get in very big trouble because the rules are applied differently for everyone.” Down to ten men, United conceded early to Noah Okafor’s first-half brace. Fernandes still produced his 17th Premier League assist to set up Casemiro’s late goal, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a historic home loss.

Do you think the red card decision was fair, or did Tierney overreact after the VAR review changed the call?

What detail after the VAR check makes you doubt the referee's fairness on that red card?

Can we really know if Tierney overreacted, or are we just reading too much into the VAR call?

It's odd that even with a VAR check, the referee still gave Martinez a straight red for what looked more like a mistimed challenge.

I'm not convinced the ref is to blame—Martinez's elbow looked raised, so some action was expected from Tierney.

United should focus on defensive discipline next match to avoid playing a man down instead of dwelling on controversial decisions.
