Politicians Should Focus on Governance, Not Fear of 2027 Polls, Says NBC Leader

Rev. Israel Akanji, President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, has urged politicians to prioritise performance over fear ahead of the 2027 elections. He made the call at a press briefing in Abuja before the NBC’s 113th Annual Session. On national security, he advocated for licensed community-based initiatives to bolster efforts against banditry and terrorism. He warned that without adequate safety, progress in education, agriculture, and other sectors would be undermined. Akanji decried viral videos of violent attacks as an affront to Nigeria’s dignity. He challenged President Tinubu to take decisive action and declared insecurity the nation’s greatest threat to survival. He also highlighted economic reforms, the “Japa” syndrome of youth migration, and the urgent need for a state of emergency in education to modernise curricula and reduce out-of-school rates. He praised the Lagos–Calabar highway project and called for better roads, railways, and more affordable air travel.

What concrete steps can politicians take now to demonstrate genuine performance focus rather than mere campaign fear ahead of 2027 elections?

Agreed. They should publish quarterly progress reports, hold town halls for accountability, and tie funding to measurable results.

Rev. Akanji's push for performance over poll fear is admirable, but previous administrations claimed the same with little measurable impact.

Rather than just pledging better governance, politicians should publish clear timelines and performance indicators for key projects to build public trust.
