FCT Urges Teachers’ Union to Suspend Strike Ahead of WAEC Exams

FCT Urges Teachers’ Union to Suspend Strike Ahead of WAEC Exams

The FCT Education Secretariat has appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (FCT Wing) to halt its indefinite strike scheduled to begin Monday. Dr Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary, made the call during an inspection tour of area schools on the eve of WAEC exams. Hayyo warned that forcing students and teachers out of classrooms just before exams could lead to mass failures. He highlighted that over 100 schools in the territory have been renovated and 40% of teacher entitlements paid this year. While the NUT commended the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and nine months’ arrears, it faults unpaid salary increments and a 40% peculiar allowance. A committee set up in July to resolve these issues submitted its report in August, but it remains unpublished.

It's surprising the strike was planned right before exams, given the disruption it could cause for final preparations.

Dem fit explore remote invigilation or shift exams, not just ask teachers to call off the strike.

Schools should create catch-up sessions after any strike to cover lost time before WAEC exams start next week.
