UI Students Block Roads to Protest Campus Shutdown Over NASU/SSANU Strike

UI Students Block Roads to Protest Campus Shutdown Over NASU/SSANU Strike

On Wednesday, students at the University of Ibadan staged a protest on major campus roads. They demanded the reopening of essential services halted by the nationwide NASU and SSANU strike. Protesters sat in the middle of carriageways and used tree branches and debris to disrupt vehicular movement. Many engaged in discussions along the roadsides while others played football to maintain morale. The joint strike by the Non-Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Association began on May 1 over the stalled renegotiation of a 2009 welfare agreement. As a result, hostels, administrative blocks, water, electricity, and internet services have been paralysed. Students now face daily challenges due to the shutdown of non-academic amenities during the academic period. They are calling on the government and unions to reach an urgent resolution.

While students want services restored, creating more chaos on campus roads may undermine sympathy for their cause.

A peaceful march to the vice-chancellor's office with a written petition could avoid roadblocks and still demand swift action.
