Diaspora Eze Ndigbo Rebuts FG and Ohanaeze Over Title Ban
His Highness Ezeigbo Nkem-Alakammadu, an Igbo traditional ruler based in Canada, has issued a strong rebuttal to the Federal Government and Ohanaeze Ndigbo. He argues that moves to ban the “Eze Ndigbo” title outside Nigeria are legally baseless and beyond any Nigerian authority’s jurisdiction. In a global proclamation, the monarch explains that sovereignty is territorial and that cultural roles abroad fall under host nations’ laws. He cites legal protections for cultural expression in countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom. He dismisses claims that the title could undermine state authority and calls suggestions to replace “Eze” with alternatives superficial. He highlights how diaspora leadership unites Igbo communities, preserves language and culture, and resolves disputes abroad. The Ezeigbo insists no Nigerian body can abolish or redefine the diaspora institution. He urges Igbo leaders worldwide, host governments, and cultural organizations to recognise the purely cultural role of Eze Ndigbo. “Igbo identity does not end at the shores of Nigeria,” he declares.
