Why Nigerians Prefer European Football Over Our Local Leagues—and Lessons from South Africa

In Nigeria, most fans back European clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea. Our local teams—Enyimba, Remo Stars and others—often get overlooked. South African supporters, on the other hand, champion their domestic league. They debate PSL clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Their pride is so strong that they name local stars like Themba Zwane as the best in the world. Egyptian fans show similar loyalty to their league. As Nigerians, we may tease South Africans, but we could learn from their patriotism. Supporting our NPFL and celebrating homegrown talent doesn’t need politicians—it starts with us.
