Lagos Residents in High-Drama Court Battle Over Estate Leadership

The Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned contempt proceedings in a dispute involving the trustees of Divine Homes Residents’ Association and several estate members. Presiding judge Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa fixed fresh hearing dates of May 11 and 12, 2026, after noting that most alleged contemnors ignored an earlier court order to appear. The matter arose from a leadership clash initiated by resident Henry Uche Nwabueze. Defence counsel argued the core issues are already before the Court of Appeal and raised a preliminary objection. They accused the applicant of abusing court processes, including obtaining ex parte orders and freezing association accounts without notifying the defendants. Justice Lewis-Allagoa stressed that the attendance order remains in force and granted the parties the benefit of the doubt before adjourning. A new ex parte application was withdrawn and struck out. The court will reconvene in May to address both the contempt charges and the defence’s objections.

How do you think the adjourned hearing on May 11 and 12 will affect relations within Divine Homes Residents' Association?

Are you expecting shifts in residents' trust or solidarity once the court reconvenes in May?

I'm not so sure two hearing dates will really change long-standing tensions among Divine Homes residents.

It's curious that no details emerged about the original contempt issues, yet the court promptly set new dates.

Maybe the real conflict lies beyond court filings; I'm not convinced this public dispute tells the whole story.

Estate members should document concerns and share them with all trustees before the next hearing to avoid further delays.
