CAF Hails Historic World Cup 2026 Success as Nine African Teams Reach Knockout Stage
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has described Africa’s 2026 World Cup campaign as a landmark achievement that reflects the continent’s growing competitiveness on football’s biggest stage. For the first time in history, nine of the ten African representatives advanced from the group stage to the Round of 32. This 90 per cent qualification rate far exceeds previous records, with Morocco reaching the quarter-finals for the second consecutive tournament and Egypt making it into the Round of 16. Other standout performers included Cabo Verde, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, South Africa and Tunisia. Motsepe noted that Africa accounted for 20.8 per cent of teams at the tournament yet contributed 28.1 per cent of those in the knockout rounds. He commended the coaches, technical staff and players for their efforts and highlighted specific areas for improvement. Looking ahead to 2030, CAF will convene a conference of national team coaches, former players and football experts to review these performances and develop recommendations. The confederation also plans continued investment in youth development, domestic leagues and technical programs across all 54 African nations to build on this success.
