Lagos After 26 Years of APC Rule: Gridlock, Failing Schools and Rigged Elections
Lagos is Africa’s largest city and a revenue powerhouse. Yet 26 years under one party have left it world-renowned for the wrong reasons. Commuters spend 70 minutes in traffic daily, costing the economy ₦4 trillion a year. Over half of government-sponsored students failed their exams in 2024, while education funding hit just 2.7% of its budget target in early 2025. The state has suffered 35 flood disasters since 2000 with no lasting drainage solutions. Local elections in 2025 delivered a near-total sweep amid reports of missing ballots, relocated polling units and locked-out voters. Behind shiny towers, 65% of residents live in slums with limited water, toilets and land rights. Lagos has the money and talent to thrive. What it lacks is leadership that governs for its people, not over them.
