As the first college of journalism in West Africa, established in 1961, and the first indigenous university in Nigeria, it was expected that the mass communication department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) would be among the pioneers in unbundling mass communication department for professionalism and specialisation, in line with societal trends.

According to Prof. Michael Ukonu, of the aforementioned department, technology has drastically impacted the field of mass communication to the extent that the concept of “mass communication” itself has been redefined, necessitating unbundling.

Reports revealed that in 2019, the National Universities Commission (NUC) proposed the idea of unbundling mass communication departments across Nigerian institutions to meet the current demand in university education and keep up with global development and best practices.

Meanwhile, as far back as 2016, and even before the 2019 NUC initiative, the mass communication department at UNN had been making arrangements with the alumni of the department to get the required infrastructure ready for unbundling.

However, a lack of funding to construct buildings and acquire necessary equipment remained a major obstacle to becoming a full-fledged faculty.

Having realized the importance of becoming a faculty, the department had not only sought the school senate’s approval but has been persistent in making plans with the alumni to acquire the necessary infrastructure as Dr. Nwachukwu stated, “The alumni have raised some funds, but what they raised was not enough.”

The Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka has taken a bold step by beaming its research attention to providing biotherapeutic and biotechnological solutions to the myriads of biosciences and biomedical challenges confronting contemporary society.

Declaring the Faculty's 4th Bioscience and Biotechnology conference open, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Romanus Ezeokonkwo who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Johnson Urama thanked the Dean for his innovative leadership and prayed that the outcome of the conference will further spur research in the areas of Biotechnology and Biotherapeutics. 

He thanked participants for the trust reposed in the University of Nigeria and the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University, stating that it accounted for the record number of abstracts submitted for the conference. 

Also, speaking during the opening ceremony, the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Emeka I. Nweze, maintained that one of the Faculty's strategic action plans is to assist the people and government of Nigeria in confronting it's contemporary challenges as it relates to biomedicals, bioscience and biotechnology.

According to him, this formed the decision of the Faculty to, among other things, title this year's Faculty conference: “Exploring the frontiers of Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biotherapeutics” to once again channel and concentrate discussions and research directions towards its vision, propelled by a global audience. 

He maintained that the quality and focus of the papers received from staff and other participants in preparation for the program is a testimony to the direction of the Faculty in ground breaking research. 

According to the Dean, his administration in the last 23 months has consciously attempted to provide the enabling environment for his staff to seamlessly carry out cutting-edge research in their chosen areas of interest. 

He welcomed the participants and thanked them for the confidence reposed in the Faculty since the inception of the Bioscience conference series.

Addressing the audience during the opening ceremony of the conference, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Emmanuel Chekwube Ossai, an Associate Professor in the Deparment of Biochemistry of the faculty opined that the theme of the conference, the fourth in the series, was aimed at gathering research scholars across the nation and beyond to present their latest research outcomes and advances in relevant fields of bioscience, biotechnology, and biotherapeutics, and to also provide an ideal environment for making new scientific collaborations and knowledge-sharing.

The two-day Faculty of Biological Sciences, UNN conference attracted researchers from across the globe among whom is Professor Umezuruike Linus Okpara of Stellenbosch University South Africa who delivered the keynote address. 

Others include Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwu Eke of the Department of Microbiology, Genetics and Immunology, Michigan State University, USA; Professor Okechukwu Abonyi of Alex-Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike; and Chisom Onu of Wayne State University, USA who, respectively, delivered plenary lectures. 

The Conference was well attended where about 125 different papers spanning the fields of bioscience, biotechnology, and biotherapeutics were presented, with over 160 registered participants.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences' annual conference is held yearly. This year's event, the 4th of its kind since inception in 2020 was held from Tuesday, July 2nd to Thursday July 4th, 2024. The conference received the highest number of abstracts since inception.

Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Oguejiofo T. Ujam, has challenged the Governing Board of South East Development Commission (SEDC) to explore the opportunities available in tertiary institutions to deliver on impactful and sustainable development in the region.

He reminded the Dr. Emeka Wogu-led board members that the South East region faces many obstacles, urging them to take special note of the approximately 2,500 active erosion sites; 28% unemployment and underemployment rate, which is somewhat higher than the national average.

The UNN VC, who spoke, weekend, during a special reception organised by the Chairman of Oranto Petroleum Ltd, Prince Arthur Eze at the Oranto International Airport Hotel Enugu, noted that the interventionist agency must pursue collaborations to deliver on its huge mandate.

Ujam commended President Bola Tinubu for endorsing the creation of the crucial Commission, remarking that “by quickly signing into law the Act establishing the SEDC and constituting the Governing Board, President Tinubu could be said to have done what Napoleon Bonaparte could not do.

“The promise of Reconstruction, which was a critical segment of the three ‘Rs’-Rehabilitation, Reintegration and Reconstruction- had remained unfulfilled by successive Nigerian leaders until Asiwaju Tinubu came to power.

“The SEDC stands out as huge testimony of President Tinubu’s interest, care, affection and understanding of the plights of the Southeastern Nigerians.

“Therefore, as I commend the President for this noble gesture, I wish to implore the members of the Governing Board, to see how best they can align the SEDC’s developmental programmes with the President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

While stressing that the UNN and other tertiary institutions in the Southeast are wiling to partner with SEDC, the Vice Chancellor assured the board that “as members of the ivory tower, our doors are open for supportive ideas and collaborative ventures to advance the delivery of their tall mandate which has the goal of achieving rapid development of South East.”

He told the august gathering that included the Governor of Enugu State, members of the National and State Assembly, traditional and religious leaders, that “apart from the liquidation of crucial infrastructure by the civil war, the Southeast has remained socio-economically dilapidated through political dissonance, social instability, ecological devaluation and general wanton economic harassment by the forces of production.”

The Acting VC reiterated that collaboration between the universities and the SEDC could end up as a low hanging fruit for a win-win situation in redefining development in the geopolitical zone.

He stated: “The mileage to be covered in the area of experiential learning can only be imagined if this collaboration succeeds in delivering on improved classrooms, libraries, laboratories, transportation systems, sustainable independent energy sources, student hostels and staff housing.

“Importantly, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, like other South East tertiary institutions, must modernize and enlarge its physical facilities, including classrooms, labs, libraries, staff housing, and student hostels.
“Staff members must be exposed to modern training and retraining on teaching and research in order to improve their capacity. The university library needs to be updated with contemporary resources and amenities, such as digital databases, online journals, and e-book subscriptions. In order to facilitate e-learning, research, and administration, the institutions must upgrade their ICT infrastructure, especially in the light of the disruptive knowledge economy of Artificial Intelligence (AI).”

Prof. Ujam regretted the increased insecurity brought about partly by separatist agitations in the region, recalling that “given the magnitude of the region's development issues, the World Bank calculated that Nigeria would need to spend $10billion a year for the next 30 years in order to address the infrastructure gap in South East.”

He tasked the board to align their programmes with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, adding that their “success story would end up as a befitting appreciation to President Tinubu for establishing SEDC.”

Part of his address read: “Let me start by saying that I am very much elated to join the hardworking governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and Ozoigbondu, Prince Arthur Eze, to welcome us all to this unique reception.

“The beauty of this gathering is that it marks a new beginning for collective reasoning in the bid to envision a common pathway for sustainable development in the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria, which forms about 73 per cent of the old Eastern Region.

“I must commend the Chief Executive Officer of Oranto Petroleum for his foresight in organizing this reception. This is how it ought to be. For the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to achieve its lofty purpose, it is essential that stakeholders in Southeastern Nigeria have the platform and opportunity to actively engage, contribute, and support the Commission in shaping its policies and initiatives.

“The various perspectives expressed by way of remarks from Southeast leaders, will definitely end up as quiet reminders to the board and management of SEDC of the monumental and historic nature of their assignment. Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has conferred a Doctor of Laws degree (Honoris Causa) on the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of quality education in the state.

Dr. Mbah, who bagged the highest degree in Law at the 53rd convocation ceremony of the university in Nsukka at the weekend, reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the education sector in order to ensure that the younger generations are able to compete among their contemporaries globally.

“The recognition is a nod to the values driving the modest achievements we have recorded in the last 18 months. Those values are shaped, particularly, by the conviction that education is the best legacy to bequeath to the emerging generation.

“Also, this award is an inspiration to double down on our commitment to serve the people and put Enugu State on a growth trajectory that reflects its true potential.

“It is a point we have demonstrated, no less, in two budget cycles by committing one-third of our entire budget sum to the education sector. We are giving our children an education that will make them truly competitive in a fast evolving global work space,” he added.

While expressing gratitude to the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Polycarp Chigbu, the chairman and members of the governing council, the university senate and the management of the institution for the prestigious award, Mbah commended the acting VC for leading a team committed to restoring the dignity of man in line with the university’s motto.

He assured his administration’s continuous support to the university to strengthen its capacity to deliver and attain the goals and dreams of the founders of the institution.

In his convocation address, the Acting Vice Chancellor announced that the university graduated 11,143 students, including over 1,000 postgraduates, and would additionally confer two recipients with the title of Emeritus Professor as well as another two recipients with honorary doctorate degrees.

He recalled the successes of the institution under his leadership to include the recording of the highest ranking in SCOPUS database for scholarly output among Nigerian universities with over 7,025 publications from 5,813 authors; advancement of critical infrastructure, strengthening of alumni relations; innovation in resolving the energy crisis that bedeviled the university before his emergence.

Prof Chigbu enjoined the graduating students to remain good ambassadors of the university as they traversed the world, pursuing their ambitions.

“Be the leading lights everywhere you go. Never cease in letting your actions reflect your ultimate mission to ‘Restore the Dignity of Man,’” he charged them.

The large banner posted on the building highlights the dress code guidelines, which are part of a broader campaign titled "Say No to Indecent Dressing and Dirty Environment." The initiative aims to instill discipline and decorum among students, emphasizing the university’s commitment to fostering a serious and respectful learning environment.
Key Dress Code Guidelines:
1. No Shorts: Shorts of any kind that are above the knee are prohibited for both male and female students.
2. No Multiple Earrings or Anklets: Students are not allowed to wear multiple earrings, nose rings, or anklets.
3. Hair Regulations: Dreaded and uncombed hair, as well as colored hair, are banned.
4. No Crop-Tops: Crop-tops and t-shirts exposing the midriff are not permitted.

5. Blouse and Shirt Restrictions: Blouses exposing the navel and sleeveless blouses are forbidden for ladies. Similarly, t-shirts exposing muscles (termed as "macho" shirts) are not allowed for men.

Speaking at the event, the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, FAS., eulogized the Dean for the landmark achievements despite the absence of TETFUND or other interventions to the Faculty. According to the VC, '' I thank the Dean for his innovative projects this is what public service is all about, university systems are for the service of humanity and not for personal enrichment, university funds are not for embezzlement, you may eat the one that will put in trouble''. A missing 100-level female student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State has been found dead. 

The deceased identified as Favour Okenyi was said to be a student in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science of the university.

She reportedly went missing on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, after attending her chemistry practical.

Her corpse was found inside a drainage at the back of the Eni-Njoku male hostel, near Akanu Ibiam Stadium on Friday evening, July 5.

The lifeless body of Favour was said to have been discovered by some students.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the university, Okwun Omeaku, said the institution’s management was shocked by the discovery.

In a statement on Sunday, July 7, Omeaku said the university management was collaborating with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death.

BARELY one month after his appointment as the Acting Vice Chancellor (Ag. VC) of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Oguejiofo T. Ujam, has started implementing the inclusive governance and reforms to restore the University on the path of sustainable growth that he promised the University Senate. 

Recall that on February 26, 2025 during his first address to the UNN Senate, Prof. Ujam described his appointment as “a collective demand on our individual contributions and collective responsibility to reposition the institution on a steady course towards ethical and innovative learning.” 

Prof Ujam also reiterated his commitment to return UNN to its legendary status as a laboratory for human inquiry and inventions, adding that he would be firm, fair and transparent in the performance of duties.

The Vice Chancellor exemplified his inclusive governance approach with the appointment of Professor Kamoru Olayiwola Usman, a Yoruba Muslim from Oyo State, as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University on Monday, March 17, 2025. 

Shortly after the first in history appointment of a DVC (Academics) of Yoruba extraction, the Ag. VC also appointed Dr. Mansur Adebowale Saddiq as the Acting Director of Medical Centre in UNN on March 20, 2025. 

While congratulating the newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) and the Acting Director of Medical Centre, the Ag VC stressed that UNN must regain its pride of place as Nigeria’s premier university. 

He had reminded the members of the University Senate that he has a mandate to work with them within the six-month timeframe to reposition the university ethically and academically.

The Ag VC charged the Senate and members of the University community to join hands with him “to purge the school system of tiny cleavages, sectional considerations and narrow mindedness that have contributed in eroding the enabling condition for research, comparative studies and adaptive application of new knowledge.”

He maintained that UNN should not be found wanting in the current technological contest defined by the rivalry between Open Artificial Intelligence and DeepSeek, stressing that “Good a thing, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the governor of Enugu, the host state of UNN, has been advocating the transition to experiential learning.
Prof. Usman, who takes over from Prof. Urama, holds a Ph.D in Mathematics Education and served as the Provost of Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo State from August 2015 through 2023. 

A member of National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies and a fellow of Mathematical Association of Nigeria, the new DVC belongs to a number of professional bodies, including Association of Promoting Quality Education in Nigeria (APQEN), Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria (CON), Fulbright Alumni, Nigerian Educational Research Association (NERA), Science Teacher Association of Nigeria (STAN) and World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI). 

He commended the Governing Council of the University led by Engr. Olubunmi Kayode Ojo for their support and dedication to catering for staff welfare, imaginative infrastructure development and innovative planning.

History was made today Thursday, the 4th of July, 2024, as the son of Nwosibe Okpara Onu of Umuobuna, Uburu will deliver the 207th inaugural lecture in the famous Princess Alexandra Auditorium and Unity Hall, which can be likened to the “terminus ad qualm” of knowledge. This significant event will take place at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, an institution dedicated to restoring the dignity of man under the leadership of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Romanus C. Ezeokonkwo. The lecture, titled "Agricultural Extension Service Delivery and Farmers' Adoption Scenarios in Nigeria: Different Paradigms and Emerging Challenges," promises to be a landmark in academic discourse.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the 207th inaugural lecturer of the only University of Nigeria, a refined urbane gentleman, a scholar of immense propensity, and an erudite professor of Agricultural Extension Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Agwu Ekwe Agwu. Professor Agwu Ekwe Agwu is the first professor in Umuobuna and one of the few professors in Uburu. Let me also highlight the patriotic uniqueness of Professor Agwu, a pan-Africanist like Jomo Kenyatta, Prof. Chinua Achebe, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, and Akanu Ibiam, who firmly believes in matters of identity and thus has no western names attached to his.

Unn Held 207th Inaugural Lecture

A student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), identified as Mr. George A. Nnaji, has gone missing without a trace. This occurred on the same day a female student on campus was reportedly kidnapped, with a ransom demanded for her release, increasing tension on campus.

Mr. George, a 300-level student in the Department of Combined Arts, has been missing since Sunday morning, 14th July 2024, after allegedly going to work and not returning.

Reacting to this incident, his course representative, Miss Ruth Oluchi, said that she reached out to him on Monday evening, a day after he went missing, through a phone call. She noted that he initially answered the call and told her that he was fine and was only at his family house.

However, she added that when she dialed the number again, it was no longer him but another voice who claimed to know nothing about George, leaving her in a state of confusion and panic.

Faculty of Biological Sciences, UNN unveils various projects, bids VC farewell

The Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka has unveiled numerous projects executed using internally sourced revenue by the management of the faculty led by the Dean, Prof. Emeka I. Nweze in the last 22 months of his deanship.
These projects include: a brand new faculty of Biological Sciences boardroom, a state of the art car lot and the first since the existence of the faculty, landscaping of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology/Zoology and Environmental Biology premises and rehabilitation of the Zwelling building which houses the two departments, provision of solar lights in the Faculty building, repair and rehabilitation of various buildings in the Faculty, provision of the state of the art laboratory equipments, installation of CCTV cameras to secure the Faculty building, providing critical office needs in some departments in the faculty among other infrastructural facilities.

Speaking at the event, the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, FAS., eulogized the Dean for the landmark achievements despite the absence of TETFUND or other interventions to the Faculty. According to the VC, '' I thank the Dean for his innovative projects this is what public service is all about, university systems are for the service of humanity and not for personal enrichment, university funds are not for embezzlement, you may eat the one that will put in trouble''. He further advised those who are thinking of self enrichment to check Onitsha or Nnewi markets.

Speaking at the event, the Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Professor Emeka I. Nweze, enumerated his achievements since assumption of office as the Dean, maintaining that his vision is to place the Faculty among the very best among equals. He thanked the Vice Chancellor and his team for finding time to come and commission these projects despite his tight schedule. He congratulated the outgoing VC for a successful tenure and thanked Prof Igwe for reroofing a section of the Faculty building which was blown off by the wind several years ago. Professor Igwe, who is the 15th Vice Chancellor of the University will finish his tenure on 10th June, 2024. The Dean also thanked staff and students of the faculty for coming out in their numbers to welcome the Vice Chancellor and his entourage.

The event was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof. Johnson Urama, the Registrar of the University, Dr. C.A. Nnebedum, the University Bursar, Mrs Ada Obi Godwin, the Acting Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Obi Njoku, many Deans/Directors of Centers and Institutes, heads of departments among others.

In a case that has left the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) community in a state of anxiety and confusion, Ugwu Chukwuebuka Nelson, a 500-level Pharmacy student, has been missing since July 2024. Known to his friends as Buka T, Nelson's last known activity was informing his friends that he was heading out to pick up a waybill. He never returned, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Initial reports suggested that Nelson was detained in connection with the murder of Favour Okenyi, a first-year female student from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science whose body was discovered in a drainage on the UNN campus. This information, provided by an anonymous source, quickly spread, casting a shadow over Nelson's disappearance. However, further investigation by MYSCHOOLNEWS revealed that Nelson is neither in police custody nor held by UNN security, according to anonymous sources from these institutions. This revelation has only deepened the mystery and raised several critical questions.

Could Nelson Have Been Killed?

One of the most alarming possibilities is that Nelson may have met with foul play. The connection to the high-profile murder case of Favour Okenyi suggests that Nelson could have been targeted either as a suspect or as a victim of mistaken identity. 200-level mass communication student and UCJ-UNN member Okoye Peter received Crisp Nigeria's maiden campus journalism award at the induction ceremony and official website launch of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UCJ-UNN), held on June 29, 2024.

The award, which was sponsored by Okeke Chibueze, the CEO of Gold Leaf ICT Centre, came with a cash prize of N10,000. Okoye's story on the prevalence of cohabitation across Nigerian tertiary institutions and its attendant dangers for students was selected for its thematic relevance, originality, and depth of fieldwork.

Other awardees at the event included screenwriter and author Nnaemeka Eze (Nanai Boi), who was honoured for teaching creative writing to the union's members. Filmmaker and communicator Frances Nwabufo and journalist Chinagorom Ugwu also received awards of honor for their contributions to UCJ-UNN. The pioneering president of UCJ-UNN, Ngozi Blessing Udeobasi, received an award of excellence for her contributions to campus journalism.

UNN alumni protest imposition of candidate in convocation election

Nsukka ---Over 1000 alumni of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, on Tuesday, took to the street to protest alleged imposition of a candidate, Chukwuemeka Udoh in the convocation election of the University by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Polycarp Chigbu.

The placard-carrying protesters while addressing newsmen at the Total Roundabout in the university town of Nsukka, Enugu State stated that the mother of all protest will start on Thursday and would be marathon until the Prof. Chigbu corrects the abuse of power being orchestrated in the University.

One of the protesters who identified himself as Clinton Ogbonna, rejected what he called "imposition of Engr. Chukwuemeka Udoh" as the convocation representative in the Governing Council of the University by the Acting Vice Chancellor.

While calling for proper convocation election where all the candidates will be given level-playing field, he called on the Pro-Chancellor of the University, General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd), to save the University of the impending crisis by calling the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution to order.

He further stated that UNN should be seen at all times as breeding ground for genuine leaders and not a haven for the power-drunks who manipulate their ways to power at the detriment of the mandate of the people. 

He also called for the cancellation of the shambolic convocation representative election in the University, insisting that the election neither held online nor physically.

Another protester, Bonaventure Omego, equally called for due process in the election where the standing orders of the University would be respected and followed religiously.

He further asked the kangaroo ICT firm contracted for the election to back off, stating that online voting and registration were not contained in the standing orders of the University.

Some of the placards read "UNN Alumni say no to abuse of power; UNN Alumni reject manipulation called convocation election by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Polycarp Chigbu; we say no to imposition among others.

It was gathered that the convocation members, and alumni of the University had earlier written a petition to the Pro-Chancellor of the University, alleging that Prof. Chigbu, unilaterally and illegally truncated and altered the procedures for the election of convocation representative in the Governing Council of the University without due recourse to the laws and standing orders of the convocation of the institution.

In a seven-paged petition endorsed by the members of the convocation and made available to Vanguard, the petitioners called on the Pro-Chancellor, to set aside the unilateral amendment of renewal of membership and voting procedures for the election of convocation representative as allegedly foisted on the university by the Acting Vice Chancellor.

They equally asked that the illegal publications of November 19 and 20, 2024 which contravene the standing orders of the convocation be withdrawn and declared null and void, and that the Acting Vice Chancellor should be advised to refrain from the alleged illegality and abuse of power currently enveloping the convocation election in the University.

The petitioners equally called on the Pro-Chancellor to ensure that the procedures for the election as contained in the publication of November 7, 2024 which is inline with the law and standing orders of the University should be allowed to subsist, urging anyone who wishes to amend the standing orders of the convocation to follow the guidelines as outlined in section 22 of the orders.

This week, I received a letter from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Dental Students Association. They appealed for urgent support of ₦40 million to upgrade their laboratory and meet re-accreditation requirements.

Out of respect for the national mourning after the passing of our former President, I delayed any public statements. Now that the mourning period has ended, I visited the faculty and donated ₦15 million. We cannot let our young people suffer because of leadership failure.

I remain committed to advancing education and healthcare in our nation. It is tragic when leaders spend millions on luxury cars and ignore critical needs like schools, hospitals, and poverty reduction. We must invest in our youth. A New Nigeria is possible.

PRESIDENT TINUBU ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP OVERHAUL AT FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced significant leadership changes at several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University.

These changes are effective immediately.

At Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing council and relieved Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.

Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University. He will be succeeded in Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, now pro-chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.

To succeed Maikudi, President Tinubu appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor at the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term. 

She will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.

In addition, President Tinubu has removed Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), before his tenure ends on February 14.

Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.

The leadership changes at UNN extend to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu reassigned to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo. 

President Tinubu appointed Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Previously, Ojo held the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja.

Senator Sani Stores is the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi. Senator Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Additionally, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately.

President Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.

The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

Okoye Ifeanyi Peter, a 200-level student of mass communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has won the maiden edition of CrispNG’s maiden campus journalism award.

Peter won the award, which comes with a cash prize of N10,000, with his story on the prevalence of cohabitation across Nigerian tertiary institutions and its attendant dangers for students.

His entry was selected considering its thematic relevance, originality, and depth of field work.

Peter, 19, hails from Anambra state in Nigeria’s south-east, but he’s based in Umuahia, Abia state.

The journalism prize was introduced by CrispNG, a youth-focused media organisation, in February 2024, to motivate students bracing the odds to horn their journalistic skills and prepare them for realities after school.

The maiden edition of the award was sponsored by Okeke Chibueze, the CEO of Gold Leaf ICT centre, also a graduate of UNN.

“I really want to commend the writer’s effort in putting this report together,” Blessing Chukwuneke, CrispNG’s senior correspondent who vetted the articles, said on Peter’s story.

She added: “Other students also did well. I am proud to see the efforts of these student journalists who are combining their studies with the rigours of journalism. I am proud of all of them. My advice to them is that they should keep writing and develop themselves the more.”

Admission at UNN, Lady Bags Same Degree from UK University

~ A Nigerian lady has celebrated acquiring a nursing degree from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom 

~ The fresh graduate recalled how she lost her University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) direct entry admission back in 2020 

~ She narrated how she took a bet on herself by taking advantage of the UK migration pathway and it eventually paid off

> A young lady, Obot Ifiokobong Patrick, has expressed excitement at becoming a nursing graduate in the UK four years after she lost her admission to study the same course at UNN.

From losing admission to a UK graduate 

In a TikTok post, Ifiokobong shared some school documents and emails, inspiring netizens with her success story

She said she was given a direct entry admission to study nursing in November 2019 and resumed school in UNN in 2020. 

Ifiokobong's department would later be changed with the explanation that UNN admitted more than their quota. The school could not resolve the issue. 

Ifiokobong said she then applied to study at the University of Derby, sat for the necessary exams and was given admission. 

In May 2024, she finished from the UK varsity.
