Chad Rounds Up and Deports Hundreds of Nigerian Refugees
Hundreds of Nigerians who fled jihadist violence were detained in Chad last week and sent back across the border. Those affected spoke to AFP about mass arrests targeting undocumented migrants. Two Nigerians said officials carried out raids in N’Djamena on Wednesday and Friday, detaining about 600 people. Chadian police took biometric data and warned that anyone returning would face up to 20 years behind bars. Chadian authorities describe the operation as a routine sweep of irregular residents. They insist nationality was not a factor and that all undocumented migrants were escorted to nearby border towns. Analysts note this move comes amid a rise in militant activity in northeast Nigeria. Many returnees face insecurity at home or economic hardship in larger cities, pushing some back to Chad after years of living there.
