Late Rutter Strike Denies Tottenham Victory in Dramatic 2-2 Draw

Late Rutter Strike Denies Tottenham Victory in Dramatic 2-2 Draw

Brighton & Hove Albion rescued a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a 95th-minute goal from Georginio Rutter. The leveller denied Roberto De Zerbi his first win in charge of Spurs and leaves the club battling to avoid relegation with only five games left. Tottenham had looked in control after Pedro Porro headed home a pinpoint Xavi Simons cross in the 39th minute and Simons himself unleashed a spectacular curling shot in the 77th. De Zerbi’s high-pressing approach promised to spark a revival, but defensive lapses have resurfaced at a crucial stage. Brighton showed their resilience early on when Kaoru Mitoma slotted home just before half-time. Then, deep into added time, Rutter capitalised on a driven pass to rifled home the equaliser. The late drama underlined Spurs’ frailties and handed Brighton a valuable point as the season heads towards its climax.

Spurs have now dropped points they desperately needed, while De Zerbi's luck hardly seems to be on their side so far this season.

It feels harsh to blame the manager when the players can't keep hold of a two-goal advantage right at the death.

Tottenham must shore up their back line and rotate fresh legs towards the final five matches to maximise their survival chances.
