Flamingos Coach Busari Demands Sharper Display Ahead of Benin Return Leg

Flamingos Coach Busari Demands Sharper Display Ahead of Benin Return Leg

Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari says his side must tighten up before the second leg against Benin Republic in the 2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier. Nigeria edged the Young Amazons 3-2 in Ikenne despite conceding an early goal. Queen Joseph levelled before halftime, while Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Ifeanyi Kindness struck after the break. Benin’s Nazifatou Dangui also found the net to set up a tense finale. Busari blamed lapses in concentration and rushed finishing for a below-par display. “We abandoned our style and became anxious after the early goal,” he admitted. “Qualification won’t come by magic—it takes hard work, determination and correcting our mistakes.” The decisive return fixture takes place next weekend at Stade de Kégué in Lomé, where Nigeria will seek to seal their spot in the U-17 Women’s World Cup final round.

What specific adjustments do you think Busari should make after conceding that early goal in Ikenne?

Absolutely, Busari should reorganise his backline and push midfield to close gaps faster after that early slip.

It's interesting they edged Benin 3-2 yet still looked vulnerable after that early goal.

They hardly looked shaky, more like finding their groove after the first goal.

Simply tightening up at the back won't guarantee success; they also need sharper attacking patterns to control the tie.

A rigorous defensive drill session before the return leg could help, especially to avoid conceding such early goals again.
