FG Unveils National Apiculture Policy to Boost Honey Exports
In Abuja during World Bee Day, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development announced plans for a National Apiculture Policy. The goal is to increase honey production, expand export earnings, create jobs for youths, and support environmental sustainability. Dr Nurullah Abubakar said consultations on the policy framework will start immediately. He noted that senior ministry officials, including the minister and permanent secretary, are already active in beekeeping. The Quality Assurance and Certification Department will help producers earn foreign exchange through honey and other bee-related exports. Speakers warned that bee populations face threats from climate change, habitat destruction, bush burning, pesticide misuse, pests, and diseases. They urged stronger environmental protections, sustainable farming practices, and deliberate policy actions to preserve pollinators. Stakeholders highlighted that Nigeria meets only about 10% of domestic honey demand, leaving a 400,000-tonne supply gap. This shortfall presents significant opportunities in production, packaging, branding, public awareness, and export for young Nigerians.
