Ebola Death Toll Rises to 131 as Virus Spreads Across DRC and Beyond

At least 131 people have died and more than 513 suspected cases are recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo as the Ebola outbreak intensifies. Health authorities report new cases in Nyakunde, Butembo and the eastern city of Goma. Uganda has confirmed two cases and one death, raising fears of a wider regional health emergency. International health bodies have declared the outbreak an international public health emergency caused by the Bundibugyo strain. An American doctor contracted Ebola and was evacuated to Germany for treatment. Two other medical staff, including his wife, remain under quarantine. The CDC is assisting in the safe withdrawal of exposed Americans. The United States has introduced strict travel screening for arrivals from affected areas in DRC, Uganda and South Sudan. Several African countries, including Rwanda and Nigeria, are tightening border checks and boosting surveillance to prevent further spread.
