Classic Mnemonics We Used in Secondary School to Remember Chemistry and Biology
In secondary school, we relied on simple short codes to recall key facts. One popular mnemonic helped us memorize the first 20 chemical elements in order. The code was: “He Has Large Brain But Can Not Offer Full Nine Subjects May All Silly Painters Stop Colouring Articles Kept Carelessly.” Each first letter stands for Helium, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Neon, Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Chlorine, Argon, Potassium, Calcium. We also used MRNIGERD to remember the life processes: Movement, Respiration, Nutrition, Irritability, Growth, Excretion, Reproduction, and Death. Those tricks made learning easier and more fun. Do today’s students still use mnemonic devices? Share your favourite school-day codes.
