OAU Explains Why It Withdrew Venue Approval for Peter Obi’s Lecture

The Labour Party’s Peter Obi had been invited to deliver a keynote lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University but was informed at the last minute that the event could not proceed. Obi took to social media to warn that this cancellation fits a pattern of more than 10 aborted engagements at Nigerian universities, which he says threatens intellectual freedom. In response, OAU’s Public Relations Officer said organisers only submitted full event details a day before the lecture. This short notice left no time for the university to arrange security, logistics or liaise with the Nigeria Police and DSS.
