No Talent Crisis in Nigeria — It’s Exploitative Hiring Practices
I believe Nigeria isn’t short of skilled professionals. Our real problem is exploitative employment practices. Many companies demand multiple certifications, years of experience, and long hours, yet they offer salaries that barely cover basic living costs. Expecting an ICT expert to manage complex systems, oversee cybersecurity, and work weekends for around ₦200,000 simply undervalues their expertise. When employers demand “the best” but don’t provide fair pay or reasonable workloads, talented Nigerians will look for opportunities that respect their skills. To harness our human capital, companies must offer competitive compensation, manageable expectations, and a work environment built on respect. Blaming a talent shortage overlooks the real challenge: creating fair, competitive, and respectful jobs so professionals can thrive and drive genuine growth.
