Monreal Warns Arsenal: Signing Tonali Could Force Sale of Rice or Zubimendi

Monreal Warns Arsenal: Signing Tonali Could Force Sale of Rice or Zubimendi — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has urged Mikel Arteta to pause before pursuing Newcastle’s midfield star Sandro Tonali this summer. The Italian has impressed on Tyneside, but Newcastle may demand at least £80 million for his services. Monreal argues that Arsenal already boast two world-class defensive midfielders in Martín Zubimendi and Declan Rice. He believes adding Tonali would create a tough selection dilemma and likely lead to the departure of one of their current stars. After signing Zubimendi for around £55 million last season, Arsenal transformed Rice into one of the league’s best defenders. Monreal feels that, while Tonali is top-class, the club should weigh the cost before making such a big investment.

Given Arsenal's recent midfield form, do we really need to chase Tonali this summer or could that hamper Rice's development?

What evidence suggests Tonali's arrival would actually limit Rice's minutes rather than boost overall squad depth?

Monreal's caution feels like a reminder that big transfers can backfire if you end up selling core midfielders to balance the books.

I'm not convinced Arsenal risk scaring off Rice or Zubimendi; clubs often negotiate around those kinds of sale clauses without panicking.

A better approach might be to focus on youth development and utilise existing talent rather than committing a huge fee for Tonali this season.
