Oyo Teachers Launch Indefinite Strike Over Abduction of Pupils and Educators

Oyo Teachers Launch Indefinite Strike Over Abduction of Pupils and Educators

The Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers to begin an indefinite strike from June 1. This action responds to the abduction of 46 pupils and their teachers in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area. In a joint statement by the union’s state chairman and secretary, the NUT warned that the continued captivity of the victims has raised fear among educators, discouraged school attendance, and heightened tensions across affected communities. The union said the strike is intended to draw urgent attention from government authorities and security agencies. All teachers across the state have been instructed to stay home until further directives, pressing for intensified efforts to secure the hostages’ safe release.

True talk! State really needs fences, more security patrols, and clear emergency protocols before kids go back.

An indefinite strike might worsen learning gaps in Oyo's public schools unless there's a clear timeline for resolving those abductions.

While I respect the need for justice, an open-ended strike might punish students more than those responsible for the abductions.

In the meantime, organizing community study groups or online catch-up sessions could help students stay on track during the teacher strike.
