Why I’d Rather Build a Future Walmart in Africa Than Hunt for Jobs Abroad
Living abroad, I often face skepticism when I warn others about immigration. People ask, “Why is someone who left telling us to be careful?” I would never aim for South Africa, the Gulf, the former Soviet Union, or most of Latin America and Asia for work. Those markets rarely open up to foreigners like us. Instead, I’d pursue legal entry into stable African countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Cape Verde, or Rwanda. My goal wouldn’t be quick riches or annual trips home to flaunt wealth. I’d start a small kiosk selling groceries and provisions—and grow it into something as big as a Walmart or McDonald’s in the future. Seeing anti-immigrant marches led by some South Africans only confirmed my belief: building opportunities within Africa’s emerging markets is the real path forward.
