COOU in Turmoil: Students Slam Forced ₦15,000 ICT Fee and ₦10,000 Matriculation Book

COOU in Turmoil: Students Slam Forced ₦15,000 ICT Fee and ₦10,000 Matriculation Book

Students and staff at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University have raised alarms over new mandatory charges under the current vice chancellor. They say an N15,000 ICT fee for the freshly launched portal and a N10,000 “Ifenkili” matriculation booklet are undue burdens that lack academic value. Critics allege the portal contract was awarded without proper procurement, and the brochure is merely praise poetry for the vice chancellor. With over 30,000 students, these fees could yield nearly half a billion naira, yet learning facilities remain decrepit and staff salaries lag behind peer institutions. Protesters want Governor Soludo to step in and hold the administration accountable. They also question a reported ₦10 million political donation by the vice chancellor while classrooms and essential services go unfunded.

It's odd that such hefty fees arrived without any clear budget breakdown or open town hall meeting for feedback from the campus community.

While costs can pile up, maybe there's an administrative reason we haven't heard that justifies the portal fee and booklet charge.

Students could propose a transparent cost audit committee and negotiate waiver options for financially struggling undergraduates before accepting these new charges.
