CISLAC Urges FG to Hike Tobacco Taxes to Curb Smoking
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre has called on the Federal Government to increase taxes on tobacco products. The appeal was made during a media training in Katsina led by CISLAC’s Executive Director. CISLAC noted that low prices have made cigarettes, shisha and e-cigarettes widely affordable. “The low cost of tobacco products has contributed significantly to widespread use, especially among low-income households,” the group said. They argued that higher levies would raise prices and discourage smoking, particularly among young people. CISLAC also urged stricter enforcement of existing smoke-free laws to protect non-smokers in public places. A senior CISLAC officer warned that tobacco harms both national health and productivity. Citing World Health Organization data, he noted that tobacco causes about eight million deaths globally each year.
