Who Truly Obeys?: The Parable of the Two Sons (Matthew 21:28–32)

In this parable, a father asks his two sons to work in the vineyard. The first son refuses but later changes his mind and goes. The second son agrees at first but fails to follow through. Jesus then asks which son did the will of the father. His listeners recognize the first son’s actions as true obedience. He goes on to explain that tax collectors and sinners are entering God’s kingdom because they believed John the Baptist, while many religious leaders have not repented despite seeing these signs. This story challenges us to value genuine repentance and obedience over empty promises.

Have you ever felt like either son in this parable when making everyday choices? Which one resonates more with you?

Can you share a specific choice you've faced that felt like obeying only in words but not in action?

It's interesting that both sons spoke obedience but only one acted, revealing how easily good intentions fade without follow-through.

I'm not convinced the first son is the real hero here. Following through once doesn't erase initial refusal or attitude.

Maybe we can set small daily goals to test our follow-through, ensuring our commitment matches our words in practical ways.
