Is YouTube Driving the Next Wave of Nollywood?

Is YouTube Driving the Next Wave of Nollywood? — 1 of 4
1 / 4

I’ve noticed more Nigerians turn to YouTube for feature films. Even established directors now upload classics and create exclusives for the platform. YouTube offers easy access compared to cinemas or paid streaming. Omoni Oboli’s Love in Every Word has over 32 million views, showing just how wide its reach can be. Nollywood has evolved from colonial-era screens to VHS, cinema releases and dedicated streaming services. YouTube is the latest way to bypass traditional gatekeepers and distribute directly. But it has its limits. Monetization rules can stifle creativity and budgets remain smaller than big-screen productions. Still, YouTube keeps the industry alive until cinemas and major streaming return.
