Two bodies have been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed Elite 5-Star Hostel in Amaokpala, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State. The three-storey building, said to contain about 60 rooms, collapsed on the night of July 26, 2026. One victim was identified by friends as Vivian Chinedum, a baker and recent Food Science and Technology graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. She reportedly moved into the hostel in March. Survivors said residents were warned in their WhatsApp group that the building's walls were cracking shortly before it collapsed. They alleged that previous occupants had been asked to leave because of the building's poor condition, but the premises were later rented out again. The state emergency agency described the tragedy as avoidable and called for unsafe buildings to remain sealed off.

What checks were in place for a three-storey hostel with about 60 rooms, especially so close to a polytechnic?

Was there any independent inspection before students were allowed to use the building?

The loss of two lives, including a fresh graduate, makes this far more than a building story. It is deeply painful.

It may be too early to assign blame from the report alone, but a collapse of this scale clearly demands serious answers.

Nearby residents and students should avoid the rubble area while authorities assess it, and other hostels should be inspected promptly.
