Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández believes Argentina are in strong shape to retain their World Cup title this summer, despite a disrupted build-up. Fernández scored the opener in a 2-1 friendly win over Mauritania in Buenos Aires. That match replaced the cancelled Finalissima against Spain, which was called off due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The camp also suffered a blow when Strasbourg’s top scorer Joaquín Panichelli tore his ACL and was ruled out of the finals. Even so, Fernández remains optimistic and says the team will arrive in top form. Argentina’s next tune-up is a home friendly against Zambia in Buenos Aires ahead of the tournament.

They should focus on integrating new midfield options now, so they have reliable cover when key players like Messi step away.
