Mom Snubbed My Omugwo Because My Husband Wasn’t Wealthy—Now She Wants Back In

Mom Snubbed My Omugwo Because My Husband Wasn’t Wealthy—Now She Wants Back In

I’m expecting my second child, and my mother has suddenly reached out to do Omugwo after years of silence. She refused to help during my first pregnancy because my husband wasn’t financially stable. We lived in a one-bedroom apartment with AC, but she chose to stay with my sister whose husband was wealthier. When I gave birth, she barely acknowledged it, and the hurt was real. My sister-in-law stepped in to care for me instead. After my husband lost his job and spent over a year learning a new trade, I ran a small business with help from my sister. My mother never checked on us then, having once opposed our marriage. Now that our situation has improved, I’ve decided to rely on my sister-in-law again.

It must have been painful to be left out last time. What do you hope will be different this time around with your mom's return?

Totally feel you—conditional love hurts. Hope you'll lay ground rules and keep mom's promises this time.

Absolutely, you deserve respect. But I'm skeptical she'll treat you differently this time. Hope proves me wrong though.

She seemed fine not helping at all when finances were tight. Now that things might look better, it feels a bit opportunistic.

I get wanting support, but maybe give her a chance to explain before writing off her intentions completely.

Set clear boundaries and talk through expectations upfront. If she truly wants to help, agree on duties and timelines for Omugwo care.
