How an HIV Diagnosis Quietly Split My Life in Two

How an HIV Diagnosis Quietly Split My Life in Two

I thought it was just malaria when I first fell sick. Fever, weakness, tiredness – things I believed would pass. But after a hospital visit, I learned I was HIV positive. My mind filled with fear. I pictured my family looking at me differently. The house felt heavy and silent. Questions ran through my head: How do I tell them? What will they think of me? I withdrew into myself until a friend reached out. He didn’t judge or rush me. He told me about HIV support groups and shared his own story. For the first time, I didn’t feel so alone. When I finally told a family member, I braced for anger and disappointment. Instead, they listened and asked questions. Today, I’m still on treatment and learning that fear can be louder than reality. Nobody should face this alone.

I agree quiet routines and journaling can help steady the mind. Leaning on one trusted friend made the day less overwhelming.

While those initial symptoms mimic malaria, it's hard to accept they alone would trigger such deep fear without other factors at play.

Connecting with a support group and regular medical follow-ups can help rebuild confidence and ease that feeling of isolation.
